We’ve seen movies especially horror movies that show very horrifying places you can’t possibly imagine do exist. Yet still, such places are here on earth. These places can get pretty terrifying even just by watching them that you have nightmares or even be afraid to visit new places or even go into a dark room. These include haunted places to cemeteries and abandoned towns amongst others.

1. The Hanging Coffins of Sagada, Philippines
Imagine walking up a hill and find coffins hanging on either steep side. Imagine then that the coffins have been there for a number of years and are beginning to wear of and the remains begin to be visible inside the coffin. What would you do when the remains start falling off and unaware of the hanging coffins you stumble on a skull?
Well, in Philippines this is no scary movie but it is reality. The Igorot tribe members there have over the years been burying their dead in hanging coffins attached to the sides of cliffs. They believe that this brings them closer to their ancestral spirits and would keep their bodies safe.
2. Abandoned Psychiatric Hospital in Parma, Italy
This is indeed one of the scariest places on earth. Just like in movies, a psychiatric hospital always looks creepy and has creepy stories and myths that go with it. A painter, Herbert Baglione has added shadow paintings on the walls of this abandoned hospital. These paintings seem to give life to the tortured souls believed to roam the hallways there.

This comes with a terrifying story that ends with men not being allowed into the attic of this house any more. Situated in Palm Beach County, Florida, this house was originally a funeral parlour before being privately owned later by Karl Riddle is considered one of the scariest places on earth. Apparently, one of Karl Riddle’s former employees by the name of Joseph hang himself in the attic. It is said that Joseph hated men and continues to display such hatred by attacking any men who enter the attic. That’s not all; it is believed that other places of the house are haunted as well that you’d find furniture frequently moved.

Every believer would want to die a saint and be buried on holy grounds. Well it seems there are many people who die with such wishes. We could probably say that holy grounds on earth where the dead can be laid to rest are very few. So, the Sedlec Ossuary in the Czech Republic resolved this problem by building a Church of Bones. Initially, it was known as the Athens Lunatic Asylum. Here, multiple lobotomies were performed and the experts there asserted that masturbation and epilepsy caused insanity in patients. According to the British Society for Psychical Research, Athens, Ohio, is listed as the 13th most haunted place in the world.
t is also believed that a 54 year old female patient who ran away was missing for 6 weeks was found dead in an unused ward. According to grapevine, she had taken off all of her garments, folded them neatly and lay down on the cold concrete where she eventually died. Through a combination of decomposition and direct contact with the sun, her corpse left a enduring stain on the floor, which is still visible today. During this time, the cemetery at the Capuchin monastery had been completely swarmed up. As a result, the original catacombs were excavated to make more room. It was initially intended that religious men would be the exclusive residents. Eventually word about the natural mummification process got out and it soon became a status representation where local citizens earned a spot to rest in peace while donning their best outfits.
Consequently, the underground tombs hold about 8,000 bodies which have been arranged in separate corridors, including one for religious figures, one for proficient men, another for children, and yet another for virgins. The corpses are displayed like a museum exhibit, as they are arranged in such a manner to depict lifelike posts.

In 1971, while Soviet scientists were on the search for oil, they accidentally struck a methane reserve causing the drilling platform to collapse, forming the crater and releasing dangerous gas into the air. To control the spread of the dangerous gas, they decided to set the crater on fire so as to burn off the methane, creating a Dante-esque incongruity that has remained lit for the past 40-plus years. 8. Suicide Forest in Japan
It seems there exists a forest where suicidal people prefer to end their lives-supposedly. Japan is home for this forest. The Aokigahara is a forest situated at the base of Mt. Fuji. It is said that over 500 people have gone to commit suicide there since the 1950s and is considered to be the world’s most scariest places on earth. In 2010 alone, about 247 people attempted to commit suicide here. 54 were successful. This trend can be derived from the fact that the forest is associated with demons in Japanese mythology.
Many hikers have had to mark their path using various methods to make it easier to find their way back out again owing to the density of the trees. The suicidal trend has caused concerned officials to put up signs with messages such as, “Your life is a precious gift from your parents,” and “Please consult with the police before you decide to die,” to discourage people from killing themselves.
9. Byberry Mental Asylum
Movie makers must have done thorough research to know that Mental Asylums indeed are horrific. The Byberry Mental Asylum is situated in Philadelphia. Founded in 1907, the hospital exceeded its patient limit quickly. It housed the mentally challenged, as well as the criminally insane patients. Due to its terrible conditions, and the sub-human treatment of its patients, the hospital was stopped and deserted in 1990. Since then it became a nuisance for the neighborhood, as it was a breeding ground for thugs, arsonists, Satanists, and city explorers.
